Honey is known to humanity since ancient times. One of the earliest evidence of raw honey harvesting is on a rock painting dating back 8000 years. Since ancient times, honey has been used as both a food and a medicine. Benefits of Honey have been used for many thousands of years, in fact most mans history has references to it. Not surprising though, it is an organic natural sugar, has no additives, easy on the stomach, if stored correctly will have an almost indefinite shelf life and easily adapted to cooking processes. Due to its incredible sweet and benefits for health taste the Egyptian Pharos implied the consumption of honey only for the lords and forbade commoners from touching it.

Honey Production

Honey is produced by honey bee in an interesting manner. The bees swarm their environment and collect the sugar-rich nectar of flowers. Then inside the beehive, they repeatedly consume, digest and regurgitate the nectar. The end product is honey, a liquid that is supposed to serve as stored food for the bees. The smell, color and taste depend on the types of flowers the bees visit.

Islamic Perspective of honey

Holy Prophet S.A.W. liked honey and consumed it on daily basis. He recommended its use for various ailments. There are several Quranic verses and Hadiths on honey and its benefits. Allah S.T has explained the whole system of production of Honey in detail.

Honey is referred to in verse (16:69) of chapter (16) sūrat l-naḥl (The Bees):

“Then eat from all the fruits and follow the ways of your Lord laid down [for you].” There emerges from their bellies a drink, varying in colors, in which there is healing for people. Indeed in that is a sign for a people who give thought.”

A Hadith [Ibn Majah] stated that Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. said:

“Make use of the two cures: Honey and the Quran”.

You can start using raw honey in your daily diet instead of other unhealthy sugars. Honey is full of nutrition and medicinal benefits that any sick person can use. It is rich in several essential vitamins and minerals which are basically empty calories. It is easily broken down without requiring high levels of insulin unlike most sugars. It also prevents blood sugar levels to spike after ingestion due to lower glycemic index. Diabetics are often misleading with the idea that every sweet food will increase their blood sugar. Although it is true to most extents, some foods do not share this property. Honey not only shares the sweetness of sugar, but is also beneficial for Diabetes treatment.
